R.M.S. Titanic: Facts, Legends, and Massachusetts Connections

The story of the Titanic continues to fascinate people worldwide, and has been captured in countless books and more recently, James Cameron’s blockbuster film. In this illustrated lecture, historian Dr. Walter Powell will explore the myths and legends that surround the ship along with some of her Massachusetts connections, including Mayflower descendants. The program will be supplemented with a display of books, newspapers, and other items related to this famous event.

Dr. Walter Powell has had a lifelong fascination with the Titanic.  A longtime member of the Titanic Historical Society (based in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts) he attended the Society’s 75th and 100th anniversaries of the sinking, meeting a number of survivors. He is presently the Executive Director of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants based in Plymouth.
